Jobs: 6 reasons why having one is important

Why jobs are important to our well being?

As many of us have come to realize, holding on to jobs is so much more than just having an income. Yes, it’s great to have some time off work as long as we are getting paid for it, but even at that, there are several mental health benefits in having a profession to go to, even if it is only part-time.

Our mental health depends on many things, and having a job or a purpose is one of those things. I’ve worked with hundreds of people who struggle with depression and anxiety. One common link was the need for a purpose or something to do during the day. For many, this was in the form of a job. Once a job was obtained and the person was able to be successful with the job, the depression and anxiety started subsiding.  Many made a full recovery.

A job, which satisfies our basic needs isn’t always enough to fulfill our purpose. For many, a job is a way to make ends meet and they seek purpose by delving into hobbies or church activities, creating art, volunteering or other interests.

What we overlook in Jobs

Stability

A job provides us with a routine and structure for our day by helping us stay on track. It means you enjoy a steady pay and benefits, and reduced stress levels.

Self-esteem

A job provides us with higher self-esteem and satisfaction. A job can help us meet our basic needs of being providers for ourselves and our family.

Work-life balance

A job provides us with an outlet. They gives us a change of pace and something different to do. A job provides us with a balance between work and life.

Socialization

A job provides us with a way to socialize with others besides those in our family. Social interaction is important for a person’s well-being and immune system.

Physical activity

A job provides us with a way to have some physical movement to help our bodies.  Those of us who have a sit-down job, can get up and move around during breaks.

Money

A job provides an income to help us take care of our bills and buy us the things we need and other things we want to have. It is a means of sustaining life.

As you can see, having an occupation is very important to our well-being. We need to be happy with who we are and what we do in life. Having an occupation can be a way to help us fulfill our needs while taking us on the path to happiness.
